The weather was absolutely perfect for late August Saturday night at Natural Bridge Speedway. Fans were treated to a special late model event, featuring the Fastrac Crate Late Model Series, and a huge sportsman field with action packed racing. With the fall season just around the corner, it is easy to get caught up in going back to school and football season. However, there is still plenty of racing remaining in 2015 at NBS. Though there are only seven weekends remaining in the season, there are a number of special events remaining including the Fall Classic featuring the super late models.
For some, winning is easy in racing. Other drivers spend their entire careers chasing that elusive first victory. Two drivers picked up career first wins in their respective divisions this past Saturday night. Joey Coleman picked up his first career late model win and Roger Robertson, Jr. picked up his first career win in the sportsman division. Other winners were Mike Lawhorne, Derek Wright, and Nick Magliochetti.
What a difference a week makes. Last week fans and drivers had to fight dusty conditions as Natural Bridge Speedway kicked off the month of August and the Dog Days of Summer. This past Saturday night was a completely different set of circumstances. A brief rain shower moved over the speedway just as the first practice session was set to take the green flag and delayed the night’s racing action just over an hour. The wait was well worth it as the shower created a perfect racing surface for the night’s six feature events.
Unfortunately, the remainder of the 2015 Karting Season at Natural Bridge Speedway has been canceled. We have attempted to develop a Karting program this season that did not produce a high enough kart or spectator count as hoped. We hope that everyone understand the cost for the facility, preparation, and production of such event was not sufficient for this program. Friday was not the optimal day for the event, along with the racing surface not being sufficient for the Kart's needs. We fully understand the demand for such a track in our area, and are currently considering other options for next years season. Again, we are deeply sorry that we cannot continue this program, and we hope that we can create a better plan to move forward into the future based on the past.
High car counts, near perfect weather, as well as the visiting Virginia Sprint Series helped pack the stands at the Natural Bridge Speedway on Saturday night. The Virginia Sprint Series made their third appearance at the track, seemingly their best race yet.
